The 1st symptom of bad gas caps is probably a gas cap that won’t tighten completely or a gas cap that is loose. This may not seem significant at first, but if it’s not fully sealed then the fuel system can be contaminated with grime and dirt. If your gas cap isn’t sealing properly, check the rubber seal to be sure it’s not brittle or missing. If you drive an old vehicle, make sure the metal gas cap is not damaged or bent. Both a bad seal or bent gas cap can contribute to the gas cap issues and might require purchasing a replacement from the manufacturer.
What problems can a loose gas cap cause, well a check engine light? A non-secure gas cap will not only let fuel vapors escape, but it can also let in grime and dirt.
