Spartanburg Becomes BMW’s Largest Production Location

July 28th, 2017 by

Way back on June 23, 1992, the BMW Group announced that it would build a United States plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina. In the 25 years since that announcement, the plant has undergone continuous expansions and additions, and the recent choice to build the BMW X model vehicles at the plant makes it the largest manufacturing facility in BMW Groups production network.

BMW has invested $8 billion into the Spartanburg location since 1992, with 3.9 million vehicles being produced at the plant since 1994. Between 2018 and 2021, the company will invest another $600 million into the facility and add another 1,000 jobs to the 9,000 employees already working there. Once the expansion is completed, the plant will have a maximum production capacity of 450,000 vehicles, 70 percent of which will be exported globally. According to a press release, Harald Krger, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG, was at the ceremony and stated.

The BMW Groups success story in the US would not have been possible without the open arms and warm hearts of the people and elected officials in the great state of South Carolina and the surrounding region. Our relationship with South Carolina has been built upon decades of professionalism, mutual trust and respect and goes far beyond just building great cars.
